An Overview of Bills of Interest

Richard Samet,  Chair, Government and Legislative Subcommittee of the JCRC

Once again, members of the General Assembly unsuccessfully introduced unconstitutional bills to allow government sponsored, sectarian prayer at official public events.
During the 2010 session of the Virginia legislature, Delegate Richard P. Bell (R-Staunton) introduced HB 1282, and Delegate Charles W. Carrico (R-Grayson) introduced HB 9. Those bills died without being referred out of  committee.
Senator Stephen H. Martin (R-Chesterfield) introduced  Senate Bill 56, which was presented to the Senate Courts of Justice Committee, which then killed
it by a vote of 9 to 6 to pass it by for the  year.
Notably, HB 9 was identical to Del. Carrico's 2009 HB 2314, and HB 1282 and SB 56 was nearly identical to Sen. Martin's 2009 SB 1072.  The scope of HB 9 was limited to police chaplains only, but SB 56 and HB 1282,  would have had broad application, including schools.

Have a Happy Passover

Matt Langsam, Interim Executive Director - JCFR

The festival of Passover is one of the most widely celebrated times during the Jewish year.
The concept of redemption, as portrayed by the Exodus from Egypt, is our people's most powerful story. It is a story that illustrates freedom comes with a price and is not easy; liberty and vision require human participation. We are not supposed to sit and wait to save the world but to be proactive.
We reenact the Exodus in the Seder each year, the Jewish journey of our people. Its annual retelling is not only about the past, it is also about the future. With great ceremony, we reenergize ourselves for the task yet at hand. The Exodus is not complete; we are completing it.
This is our goal even today. We are still journeying: from Egypt to the Promised Land, from slavery to freedom, from crisis to resolution, from despair to hope.
The Haggadah's concluding phrase, "Next year in Jerusalem," refers not only to the place but also to a vision of the world improved. On behalf of the officers, board and staff of the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond, best wishes for a happy Passover.
